They almost walked past it.
A pool of light caught between tides — gold and rust held inside a ring of wet sand and shadow. The kind of thing that exists for exactly as long as it takes you to notice it. Then it's gone.
This painting was built the way the beach builds itself — texture paste and sand laid first, then coffee, dry pigments, and acrylics finding their way into the grit. Oil sticks last, tracing the gold, deepening the rust. The black at the edge doesn't threaten. It just reminds you where the water will return.
Before the Next Wave is for the individual who has learned to stand still long enough to catch the fleeting thing. Who knows that impermanence isn't a reason not to look — it's the reason to look harder.
Some things are only beautiful because they won't last.
I started this painting after a walk on the beach with my dog Katie Kakes. It was one of those wonderful days of just exploring and doing awesome sniffs (Katie Kates, not me!) But we came across this stream and it just caught my attention and I knew I needed to replicate that feeling. Peace, calm, grounded. Enjoy!
